Apache Cross
In 1877, Geronimo was incarcerated in Saint Augustine, Florida. It was during this time he asked to speak to a spiritual advisor and the Army sent him a Catholic Priest. He noticed the cross the priest was wearing and asked him for one. No one knew at the time that Geronimo saw the Apache symbol of "Medicine Wheel". The Medicine Wheel has multi-faceted meanings. "Birth - Adolescents - Maturity - Wisdom" / "Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter" / "Maternal - Paternal Parenting" / and "The Four Directions" While his captors assumed he had found their faith the word spread throughout the land that Geronimo had converted to Christianity, this was false. The Catholic Church began giving crosses to Native Americans always assuming that they now believed in their faith. This in itself helped to relieve some of the guilt over broken promises and the treatment of Native Americans
Apache Cross a dual meaning which depicts a Christian symbol and a Medicine wheel symbol showing the four directions.
